Mooooove over traditional farming, the Internet of Things is here and it’s going to revolutionise Australia’s cattle industry.
But wait, we know what you’re thinking: “What can the Internet of Things actually do for cows?!” or to an extent, livestock production? According to a report from the Huffington Post, the answer is simpler than you’d think.
In a gathering of communications specialists and fanatics in Sydney, experts dug in and put their opinion on how IoT is expanding at an exponential rate that it’s starting to penetrate to different industries in the country – cattle industry included.
How? By learning and tracking the fertility cycle of cows, which can aid in increasing milk production among other things.
Fujitsu Australia, a leading IT business, said “what we did […] is we put pedometers on cows. It sounds easy. We took the data of how many steps they do, we add feedback data and we put it into the cloud.”
So how would that help the farmers? Well, by putting these tinker toys in the cow, the farmer can now look at individual cow fertility data, via notifications, and know if a cow is now ready to be inseminated.
Not only did it help the farmers have a better way of knowing the cycles of cows, but it also gave them an insight regarding the overall health of their livestock.
As of now, over 10 billion devices are integrated to the IoT, but many experts predict that those numbers could blow up to 30 billion in just four years – talk about an IoT boom!

Apart from cows, the Internet of Things also helps farmers with their fresh green produce especially an essential salad ingredient – lettuce.
IoT simply helps growers track and reduce the rate of potassium by controlling the growth of the crop.
Like all advances connected to the internet, this technology all hinges whether or not there’s sufficient connection available and luckily, there is a new and much improved internet thanks to the nbn®‘s satellite internet – Sky Muster® and Sky Muster® II.
The NBN’s Sky Muster satellite brings better satellite internet connectivity to regional Australia. To get onboard Sky Muster, call Activ8me on 13 22 88 or by going to our homepage
