Wi-Fi used to be a novelty, but ever since mobile devices garnered the ability to use it, we haven’twanted to live without it.
Did you know, the Wi-Fi box was an Australian invention? The hardware that is the prototype of wireless LAN came from the country, according to a report by The Register.
In fact, the National Museum of Australia or NMA, has called the Wi-Fi box Australia’s greatest contribution to world history.
Nowadays, imagining life without Wi-Fi is a dreadful thought —  almost everything we do today requires an Internet connection. Fortunately for us, the Wi-Fi box was invented, thereby making the distribution of wireless connection a big possibility.
The hardware was made by the geniuses at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation or CSIRO. Scientists developed the math, technology and underpinning for  Wi-Fi, based on their observations of black holes and pulsars.
Conducted by their radiophysics and radio astronomy teams, the invention of Wi-Fi was noted to be a case of “pure research” developing into something very useful.
The value of this invention cannot be stressed enough. NMA senior curator Dr. Michael Pickering noted that the WLAN invention revolutionised how people communicate all over the world.
Dr. Pickering added that the device’s “modern ubiquity” made it their top choice to be included to their artifacts and highlighted how Australian inventions have made global impacts.
