Internet usage in the land of Oz is rapidly increasing year after year. The latest report of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on the nation’s Internet activity shows that Aussie data hoggers have consumed a staggering 1.7 exabytes (1.7 million terabytes) of data during the last quarter of 2015, which is up by 50.4 percent from the same period the previous year.
Overwhelmingly, 98 percent of the data or 1.67 million terabytes were downloaded through fixed broadband connections, which include DSL, FTTP, and other technologies. Data usage through wireless technologies, such as fixed wireless, satellite Internet, and USB mobile broadband also grew by 21.6 percent with a total download of 41,757 terabytes.
According to the ABS research, fibre technology is the fastest growing Internet connection service with more than 645,000 subscriptions. Moreover, subscribers for Internet services that offered download speeds of 8 Mbps or higher have increased to 10.6 million, which is up by 16.8 percent year-on-year.
With the rapid proliferation of smartphones and tablets, mobile subscribers also grew to 21.3 million users. Last year, a total of  90,693 terabytes of data was downloaded over various mobile devices in the last quarter, which is up by 27 percent quarter-on-quarter. On the average, every Aussie subscriber downloads around 1.4 GB of data every month.
This skyrocketing of data usage coincided with the advent of new streaming video on demand (SVOD) services in the country last year, including streaming industry leader Netflix, and other local players, such as Stan and Presto.
The massive growth is also attributed to the nbn® rollouts, which is behind some of the dramatic developments in fibre network connections.
Currently, around 2.7 million Australians are estimated Netflix fanatics, followed by Stan that has more than 700,000 subscribers. Ovum, a research firm, has predicted that there will be more than 4.7 million SVOD subscribers in Oz by 2019.
