Tips for managing your data allowance


Tired of going over your data limits?

If you find yourself pushing your data plan’s limits, there are things you can do to monitor your data to fit your needs. After most wireless providers scrapped the unlimited mobile data, the fixed data plan has become the standard for wireless broadband.

Satellite Internet service providers have also set bandwidth caps for their customers. Being mindful of your data usage consumption helps ensure you don’t get shock when you check your monthly bill.

With a bandwidth constrained Internet account, here are some tips to better budget your data allowance:


Watch videos in SD and limit HD

It is not a good idea to stream videos at HD quality resolution if you only have a 2 GB data allowance. A single episode of a series equals about 800 MB when watched in HD. If you are going to use all your 150 GB of bandwidth to watch HD video from Netflix, for example, you will only be able to watch about three hours per day in two weeks before your data allowance runs out.

Instead, consider using SD video or a lower resolution. You also have the option to disable HD streaming as part of your account settings – the extra bandwidth you save will make the difference of not getting an over limit penalty from your ISP.


Set limit to the amount of data

You can set a limit for how much data your smartphone uses for a month. A warning tells you when you are approaching that limit. Go to Settings > Data usage. Make sure your monthly usage cycle matches that of your phone contract.

Data usage shows you a large graph detailing how much data you have currently used – choose a maximum amount of data that can be used in a month. Your device will warn you that you are close to that limit.


Minimise mobile web browsing

Keep your mobile Web browsing to a minimum when on a 3G or 4G network. Web pages embedded with too many videos that play automatically can quickly eat up bandwidth. Real-life usage also involves data transfers. Make sure you only update apps when accessing your home Internet account.
