NBN Envisions the Modern Household with Internet of Things

 
More and more people are adopting Internet-connected applications for their homes. How will this change the way Australian households move and function?
In an nbn-commissioned report by Telsyte, Internet Uninterrupted: Australian Households of the Connected Future, it was revealed that the average Aussie household have rapidly increased simultaneous broadband application use.
There are currently five prime examples of modern households each using multiple connected devices for various purposes in the home. By understanding how these households connect, we can get a better idea of where we fit in and how super fast broadband could make day-to-day living easier.
The Hectic Household
Are you a career-driven parent with children living at home? You may have this type of household.
The hectic household has plenty of entertainment devices in the lounge or game room which bring the household together. Since this type of household consumes technology for both play and work, it uses cloud storage and other Internet-enabled services heavily.
It is predicted that by the year 2020, the current 12 applications could rise to as many as 19 applications running simultaneously during peak times throughout the day.
Suburban Dreamers
If you’re a parent who likes to leave work at the office, you could be living in a Suburban Dreamer’s Household.
Your household uses the Internet mostly in the hours after you get home until you put the kids to bed.
Based on Telsyte research, 53% of Suburban Dreamers experience lags between 5 to 7pm, with around 7 apps running during peak usage. By 2020, this number could go up to 13.
Shared Households
People living in shared households are heavy but budget-conscious Internet users. These are individuals who co-habiting with others, and despite owning fewer devices compared with other Australians, they still compensate in terms of Internet usage, particularly via TV and video streaming.
From 8 active applications running simultaneously during peak hours, shared households may be using as many as 12 applications by 2020.
City Living
Couples without children have created a (slightly oddly names) City Living Household.
Technology supports their active lifestyle and powers it, requiring them to invest in mobile technology and new devices. These allow them access to the Internet whether they at home or out and about.
Research has shown the average City Living Household has 11 active applications at peak times, expected to go up to 15 by the year 2020.
Empty Nesters
Empty nesters are older couples who no longer have children living at home.
They may not have the latest gadgets, but have learned to embrace technology to get things done around the house. During peak usage, empty nesters have about 6 apps running, with this number potentially rising to 9 in 2020.
