Speeds to double for NBN Fixed Wireless Broadband

Person holding an ipad showing YoutubeRural and regional Australians serviced by the nbn’s Fixed Wireless technology will soon have the option of upgrading to speeds of 25Mbps download and 5Mbps upload (25/5Mbps).

This is a doubling of the current Fixed Wireless maximum speed, and surpasses ADSL2+ speeds.

The speed upgrade is scheduled to take effect mid 2013.  Once implemented, Activ8me will offer the 25/5Mbps speed upgrade to its current fixed wireless customers and new customers for an additional $5 per month.  The announcement was made this morning by Communications Minister Stephen Conroy.

How does the upgraded Fixed Wireless speed of 25/5Mbps compare to ADSL broadband?

The maximum ADSL2+ speed is around 20Mbps, however this is highly variable depending on how far the householder lives from the exchange. By comparison, Fixed Wireless will be superior to ADSL in terms of speed and consistency.

Senator Conroy also announced NBN Satellite speeds will increase to 25/5Mbps in 2015 when the new satellite is launched.
